CLERMONT, Florida — The decision to take an Uber to vandalize a woman’s car in October 2019 gave a Lake County Sheriff’s Office detective the proof he needed to obtain a warrant for a Clermont man’s arrest.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on Oct. 20, 2019, LCSO deputies responded to a home in Clermont and met with a woman who was visibly upset. She told deputies her neighbor had knocked on her door to tell her 2019 Honda had been vandalized; the woman said she believed Douglas Daniel Anderson, 31, her ex-boyfriend, had flattened all four tires, punctured two of them, broke a light and scratched a derogatory term into the paint on the driver’s side door. The victim estimated the car had suffered about $3,000 worth of damage.

Three days later, the victim told the detective investigating the case that Anderson frequently takes Uber or has friends take him where he wants to go. The following day, Oct. 24, 2019, the victim called the detective and told him while she was installing flood lights, she found that her porch lightbulb had been removed and three of her flowerpots were missing. She canvassed the wooded area near her home and found a broken lightbulb and her plants.

On Oct. 29,2019, Uber Technologies Inc. was served with a subpoena for all information pertaining to Anderson between Oct. 18 and Oct. 21, 2019. In January, LCSO received a response and found that Anderson was picked up at his home at 3:40 a.m. Oct. 20, 2019, and dropped off at 3:49 a.m. at a location just 285 yards from the victim’s home. He was picked up 2 hours and 11 minutes later one block from where he was dropped off and taken back to his home.

A warrant was filed for Anderson’s arrest April 6 and he turned himself in at the Lake County Jail Sunday, where he was released on $2,000 bond.
