PAISLEY, Florida — A woman who tried to help a man escape capture by Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies ended up in jail herself Monday after the man was found hiding under her bed with a different haircut.
Around 6:10 p.m. Tuesday, an LCSO deputy spotted Charles Mallard Busby, 26, driving a green Honda sedan in the area of Bougainvillea Street in Paisley. The deputy attempted to get behind Busby, who has a revoked license and is a habitual traffic offender, according to his arrest affidavit; Busby quickly turned down Jean Avenue, exited the vehicle and jumped a fence at 27940 Jean Avenue.
Deputies believed he ran into the home on Jean Avenue and made contact with the homeowner, who gave them permission to search the residence. Deputies cleared the home, except for the bedroom and bathroom of Emily Allena Hughes, 26. A deputy knocked on the door and Hughes responded she was using the restroom and Busby was not there. Deputies waited for several minutes for Hughes to open the door and the homeowner attempted to convince Hughes to exit, according to the affidavit.
Several more minutes went by and Hughes finally exited the bathroom and deputies searched it and her bedroom. Busby was located underneath her bed with a freshly buzzed haircut. Busby was taken into custody and made several spontaneous statements about driving the car, just getting out of jail and cutting his hair, the arresting deputy noted in the affidavit.
Deputies questioned Hughes who denied helping Busby but did not have an answer as to why it took her so long to open the door. Busby was charged with driving with a suspended license-habitual traffic violator, attaching tag not assigned, resisting an officer without violence and obstruction by disguised person. He was also recommitted on three prior charges and is being held in the Lake County Jail on $18,500 bond.
Hughes was charged with aiding escape and resisting an officer without violence. She was released from the Lake County Jail on $3,000 bond.
