GROVELAND, Florida — A man who cried and said he needs help during an interview with a Lake County Sheriff’s Office detective has been charged with aggravated child abuse after he admitted he shook an infant.
On Monday, Jonathan Bryant Henderson, 32, of Groveland was arrested after an LCSO detective responded to Winnie Palmer Hospital in Orlando Monday to assist the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in reference to an injured infant. According to an arrest affidavit, the baby did not have life-threatening injuries, but did require surgery to remove excess blood in his head.
Henderson told the detective he became “overwhelmed” while babysitting on June 12 and had shaken the baby two or three times to quiet him. Henderson also disclosed he had shaken the baby on another occasion, two or three weeks before. Due to heavy redaction in the arrest affidavit, Henderson’s relationship to the child is unknown.
Henderson told the detective after he shook the baby, he cuddled him and put him down on a bed; he tried to feed the baby, but the baby vomited more than once throughout the day and he and an unidentified person took the infant to AdventHealth Waterman in Tavares on Friday. They were told the baby may have an upset stomach and were sent home.
The baby’s condition worsened, and an unidentified female told the detective she took the baby to Winnie Palmer Hospital in Orlando and Henderson told her that he had shaken the baby about a week prior to the hospital visit.
Henderson is charged with aggravated child abuse and was released from the Lake County Jail on $10,000 bond.
This is the second time this month a Lake County man has been accused of shaking a baby. Last week Lake Legal News reported on Drew Wyatt Oldenburg, 26, of Fruitland Park after he was arrested for aggravated child abuse. Oldenberg is alleged to have shaken his infant son in May, causing three open spots and a retinal hemorrhage. Medical staff found blood on the baby’s brain and he was taken in for emergency surgery at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. Oldenburg is being held in LCJ on $25,000 bond.
